Air India employee, passenger held for gold smuggling

An air passenger and an Air India employee were arrested at Mumbai International Airport here today, after five gold bars collectively valued at Rs 1.27 crore which were allegedly being smuggled in, were confiscated, a senior customs official said.

According to airport customs officials, passenger Muhammed Sheriff Rahiman, who arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight this morning, was arrested at the airport after five gold bars weighing one kilogram were discovered in his luggage.

The confiscated gold is valued at Rs 1.27 crore.

During his interrogation, the name of his alleged accomplice Ramesh Bansode, who allegedly helped him bring the gold out of the airport hoodwinking security agencies, was revealed.
 

Bansode, who is an Air India employee was also arrested, a customs official told PTI.

The two were arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act and a further probe is on.
