Air intelligence unit arrests three for smuggling gold, cash

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Mumbai Customs today arrested three persons including a Sudanese national in connection with smuggling in three different cases.

In the first case, the AIU officials said they intercepted Sudanese national Alaaeldin Mustafa Gasmalla after his arrival from Khartoum via Jeddah and his search led to recovery of 1563 grams of gold worth Rs 39.41 lakhs.

In the second case, the officials said that Mushtari Sheikh was intercepted and a search of his baggage resulted in recovery of USD 60000 cash equivalent to Rs 38.22 lakhs in Indian money.

AIU officials said that he had concealed the currencies in a jam bottle, bread packets, talcum powder pack and biscuit packet etc.
 

In another case, the customs officials said Arif Dawood Khan was apprehended and checking of his baggage led to recovery of USd 67200 equivalent to Rs 42.80 lakhs.
