An observational mobile station for air quality monitoring was inaugurated today by Guru Nanak Dev University Director Tarlok Singh Banipal in the varsity premises here.
The unit will assess the background pollution in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, he said.
Air quality is getting worse during the winter period due to inversion phenomenon (minimal dispersal of air due to cap created by temperature difference), Banipal said.
Smoke emitting from bruning of coal burning, crop stubble, solid waste, and the vehicles in presence of catalysts like ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate further aggravates the problem, he said.
