All employee unions of the N S C Bose International Airport here jointly formed a forum today and requested West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to write to the Union Civil Aviation ministry to oppose the move of the airport's privatisation.

The employees union alleged that the Airports Authority of India and Union Civil Aviation ministry were handing over maintenance of different facilities of the new integrated terminal building to private companies which was a precursor to privatisation of the airport.

Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy attended the meeting where it was decided that all employees unions would form a forum which would spearhead the move to oppose privatisation of facilities of the new integrated terminal building.

In the meeting it was decided that airport employees would request the West Bengal Chief Minister to write to the Union Civil Aviation ministry to oppose the move to handover maintenance of the facilities of the airport to the private parties.

On January 20, President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the new integrated terminal at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (NSCB) International Airport.

The state-of-the-art integrated terminal has been built at a cost of Rs 2,325 crore. It can handle 25 million passengers annually, a leap from the current capacity of 4.8 million a year.

Apart from the 1,95,000 sq m, five-level integrated passenger terminal building, the new facility also offers modern taxiways and extension of a runway, so that it can handle bigger aircraft such as Airbus A-380.
