The All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) today urged the Omar Abdullah government to bring an Ordinance to introduce the 73rd constitutional amendment of Indian Constitution to strengthen the Panchayati Raj institutions in the state.

"We urge both the National Conference and the Congress to pass an ordinance to extend this important provision to boost democracy at the grassroots," AJKPC general secretary Anil Sharma said here.

Sharma said the 33,000 elected Panchayat members have been patiently waiting for the government to fulfil its promises regarding empowerment of panchayati raj institution in the state.

Alleging that the National Conference-Congress government has done nothing concrete in this regard, he said political parties must respect 33,000 elected panchayat members who are selflessly working on the grounds.

The Panchayat leader said very little time is left for the completion of the present government's tenure so it would therefore be justified if an ordinance is brought on the pattern of the Food and Land Bills.
