Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today planted a sapling as part of a statewide campaign to plant over five crore saplings in a day to create a record.

"We are planting over five crore saplings today across the state. It will be a record," Akhilesh told a gathering here.

Attacking the BJP government at the Centre, he claimed nothing has been done for Uttar Pradesh in the last two years.

"BJP should tell what has it done for the people of the state in the last two years. People know what the reality is. Our government is committed to the development of the state and several developmental schemes have been launched by us," he said.

"I want to ask those who promised 'acche din' (good days), what have they done for the unemployed youth. The SP government on the contrary has created job opportunities in the police and other government departments and recruited them," he added.

Meanwhile, at a programme in Lucknow, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said saplings have been planted at 6,166 places in a day in the state, setting a unique record of sorts, thanks to the initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government.

He said natural resources should be utilised properly and positive steps should be taken in this direction and appealed to the people to plant as many saplings as possible to ensure a good environment for the future generations.

Exhorting every individual to resolve to plant at least five saplings and protect them during their lifetime, Yadav claimed the Bundelkhand region too was "turning green" due to the forestation drive.
