Established in the year 1944, ALC Pune, which serves armed forces primarily and also civilians, is Asia's oldest artificial limb centre which has benefited over 50,000 amputees till date.
Lieutenant General Mandeep Singh, Director General Hospital Services in the Armed Forces, said, "The centre has been sanctioned an important project to design and develop knee shin assembly of suitable alternative material for above knee amputees in place of the wooden one used in the manufacture of exo-skeletal prosthetic limb."
Another official with the centre said, "Currently available knee shin assemblies exoskeleton prostheses that is made of wood is not only heavy but also not environment friendly. It is not available in abundance and as such we end up paying a huge price. That is why we are looking for alternative material."
