There is tension in the district, which has a sizeable Bodo and migrant population, since the past few days after three youths went missing and subsequently some body parts were recovered from a river, official sources said.
Police has sent the body parts for forensic tests and a magisterial inquiry has also been ordered into the incident.
The sources said Sonitpur deputy commissioner Tapan Chandra Sarmah today held a meeting with police officials, army 4 Corps headquarters and para-military forces to beef up law and order situation in the district,
Sarmah later said security has been beefed up in the sensitive areas and intelligence network geared up round the clock to check any kind of disturbances. He also urged the people not to pay any heed to rumours being spread by miscreants.
Sonitpur Superintendent of Police A J Barua said besides monitoring the sensitive areas, patrolling by river police in Brahmaputra river and its tributaries has also been intensified.
