The Algerian Football Association has been fined USD 56,400 after fans set off smoke bombs and flares during its last World Cup group match against Russia.

FIFA announced the fine today, saying the Algerian FA "has been held liable for the improper conduct among its own group of spectators."

Algeria plays Germany later today in Porto Alegre. Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev also was targeted with a laser pen before Algeria scored in a 1-1 draw at Curitiba last Thursday.

Russia coach Fabio Capello said Akinfeev was "blinded by the laser beam."

Algeria fans are known for bringing fireworks into stadiums.

At a World Cup warm-up against Romania in Geneva, Switzerland, the referee threatened to abandon the match because of Algeria fans' disorder.
