French President Francois Hollande says his Algerian counterpart, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, remains in France and is convalescing at a Paris hospital.

Hollande said today on France-24 TV that Bouteflika, 78, is receiving "all necessary care" at Invalides military hospital and that he hopes the Algerian leader can return home as soon as possible.

Paris and Algiers have communicated little about Bouteflika's health since he was rushed to France for treatment after suffering a mini-stroke on April 27.

Last week, the French Defense Ministry said only that Bouteflika had been transferred from Paris' Val-de-Grace hospital to an unspecified "establishment" to continue his recovery.

Algerian civil society and opposition parties have expressed repeated frustration over the lack of information and have suggested it might be time to declare the president unfit to rule.
