It was the biggest night of Hollywood and the celebrities put their best fashion foot forward as they glided down the red carpet in shades gold, silver and white at the Dolby Theatre here.

From Nicole Kidman's Armani Prive dress, which was considered to be her "nod to sari," to Emma Stone's dazzling gold Givenchy couture gown channeling the trophy itself, the red carpet saw some of the biggest and best fashion moments of this year.

The "La La Land" star's beaded golden dress finished with twenties flapper girl fringing was Riccardo Tisci's final designs for the brand before he stepped down as creative director earlier this month.

Charlize Theron donned Christian Dior's gold and charcoal shaded design channeling this season's nostalgia for the eighties.

Halle Berry made a triumphant return to Oscars red carpet wearing a Atelier Versace Couture gown. Her dress was a combination of black and shimmer, but what grabbed the attention was her curly bouncy hair.

"Star Wars" star Felicity Jones looked lovely in a ballerina inspired tea-length tulle dress. She accessorised the all-gold look with dangling earrings.

"Fifty Shades..." star Dakota Johnson did pick a golden Gucci dress, but could not impress the fashion police with her choice.

And while Justin Timberlake gave an entertaining start to the evening, his wife Jessica Biel stunned in a golden, Oscar statuesque KaufmanFranco.

"Gold is the colour of the night," she said at the red carpet.

Priyanka Chopra also made a striking appearance in a geometric Ralph and Russo white-and-silver panel dress.

Nominated for best actress for her role in "Elle," Isabelle Huppert dazzled on the red carpet in a long sleeve, embellished off-white gown designed by Armani Prive.

Another best actress nominee Ruth Negga made a fiery arrival in a high-collared, long-sleeve Valentino gown that she accessorised with a blue ribbon as a symbol of solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Taraji P Henson stepped onto the Oscars red carpet looking like an absolute siren. "The Hidden Figures" actress appeared in a velvet, dark navy Alberta Ferretti gown, paired with a Nirav Modi diamond necklace.

Best supporting actress winner Viola Davis ditched the gold trend for a stunning appearance in red Armani Prive gown.

Apart from gold and silver, the red carpet was dominated by monochrome gowns.

While best supporting actress nominee Naomie Harris and Karlie Kloss opted for white numbers, last year's winners Brie Larson and Alicia Vikander, Kirsten Dunst chose black as their colour. Chrissy Teigen wore a sparkling white Zuhair Murad Couture creation.

Veteran actress Meryl Streep, who was accused by Karl Lagerfeld of being paid to wear, over one of his Chanel creations, made a low-key entrance into the Oscars in navy blue bedazzled number.

While the actresses were classy yet experimental with their fashion choices, the actors played it safe in black tuxedos. The only exceptions being Dev Patel, Jamie Dronan, Octavia Spencer, in white and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in blue.
