Congress candidate Capt Amarinder Singh today demanded imposition of financial emergency in Punjab saying the Reserve Bank of India has refused further overdraft to the state.

He said, the situation was going to deteriorate further as the state will not have the money even to meet day to day expenses.

Addressing a public meeting at village Vashowa in Ajnala assembly segment here, he held Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal responsible for the current "sorry" state of affairs.

"The state government had not been able to pay even the salaries of its employees for the last three months. The state coffers are literally empty," he said.

The former Punjab Chief Minister said, while the Badals were "shameless" as they were busy amassing personal wealth, every Punjabi was ashamed of this situation.

"It is unbelievable that a prosperous and progressive state like Punjab, which was at one point of time the top most state in the country in terms of economic and financial growth is now at the threshold of financial emergency," he said, adding Badals have made this unbelievable thing to happen.

Compared to the "financial bankruptcy" in the state, Capt Amarinder said, the Badals had grown richer and richer.

"How come the state was getting bankrupt and the Badals were getting richer having two hotels worth Rs 1,000 crore each while two more were under construction, private jets, thousands of acres of land spread all over the country and huge property abroad?" he said, and asked people to think about it before casting their vote.

He also accused the Badals of robbing the state resources.

"They have grabbed the sand and gravel, liquor trade, transport business, cable distribution and lot more where they thought they could earn money," he said, while wondering what would Badals be doing with all this money.
