Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and is learnt to have discussed candidates for the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by- election with her.

The party's Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar, who had lost the election from his Abohar constituency in the recent assembly polls, is the frontrunner, party sources said.

The Gurdaspur seat fell vacant in April after the untimely death of sitting BJP MP and actor Vinod Khanna.

The meeting between Singh and Gandhi lasted around 30 minutes, party sources said. The candidate is likely to be announced within a couple of days, the sources said.

The Election Commission had issued the notification for the by-election on September 15. The last date for nomination of candidates is September 22 while the polling will take place on October 11.

The Punjab Congress yesterday authorised Sonia and vice president Rahul Gandhi to take the final call on the name of candidate for the bypoll.
