Congress leader Amarinder Singh today sought for the granting martyr status to the victims of the Kalianawala Khu besides performing their last rites with full military honours.

Talking to media before addressing a rally here, Amarinder said as the nation had recognised 1857 as the First War of Independence, those killed in the Kalianawala Khu, who participated in the uprising against the British, deserve to be granted the status of martyrs and demanded that their last rites should be performed with full military honours.

Addressing the rally, Amarinder, who is the Congress nominee for Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, lashed out at the Akali-BJP alliance for failing all sections of the society.

Attacking his rival BJP's Arun Jaitely, he said Jaitley was not even remotely concerned with Amritsar.

Referring to Jaitley's reported derogatory remarks about soldiers, he asked him to tender an unconditional apology or face protest.
