Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and Amritsar MP Amarinder Singh today said he will be campaigning for his wife Preneet Kaur, whom the party has pitted for Patiala Assembly bypoll.

Singh told reporters that he will campaign for his wife and former MP Preneet Kaur, who was fielded by the party from Patiala Assembly seat, which he (Amarinder) had vacated following his election from Amritsar in the recently-held Lok Sabha elections.

The former chief minister said he was presently busy in the monsoon session of the Lok Sabha, but he will accompany his wife when she will go to file her nomination papers for the bypoll on August 2.

"I will concentrate in Patiala and will camp in the constituency after the conclusion of the monsoon session on August 8," he said.

Regarding Talwandi Sabo, where bypolls are slated next month along with Patiala, Amarinder said that it was the duty of state party president Partap Singh Bajwa to campaign for the party candidate in Talwandi Sabo.

Asked about SAD opposing formation of separate SGPC by Haryana, he condemned the state government's role and said the state government should not politicise the issue.

"Akal Takht is a supreme body for all Sikhs so the Badal government should not politicise the matter by dictating the terms to the Jathedars as it is like playing with fire," Singh said.

He further said that "In 1971, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had launched a Morcha (agitation) for demanding separate Gurdwara Committee for Delhi. If Delhi has a separate committee then why can't Haryana have one".

Talwandi Sabo seat fell vacant after sitting Congress MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhi deserted the party to join ruling Shiromani Akali Dal.
