In a statement here, Singh said he was glad to learn that Badal had proposed that he (Amarinder) should convene a meeting of all the opposition parties in the state.

The PCC president said, after the Sanjha Morcha stages its dharna against the government on September 21, he will call all the opposition leaders and fix a date that will be convenient to everyone.

The unity of the opposition was the need of the hour since the Akali-BJP government had allegedly betrayed and let down the people of Punjab and now it had come out with punitive taxation.

He expressed confidence that the opposition parties will work together to make the state government realise its mistakes.

Badal, the estranged nephew of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, had yesterday suggested that Singh should convene a meeting of opposition parties in Punjab.

Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ridiculed Singh's statement on the proposed meeting and said these "public postures cannot restore the lost dignity of both the leaders."

The people of Punjab had overwhelmingly rejected the two opposition parties as they have seen that the Sanjha Morcha was just fighting a proxy battle on behalf of the Congress, the SAD spokesperson alleged.
