An alleged henchman of former Uttar Pradesh Minister Amarmani Tripathi has been booked for allegedly threatening a Samajwadi Party MLA here, police said today.

According to a complaint by Shri Bhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit, SP MLA from Dibai Assembly Segment, he received a call on his mobile phone yesterday afternoon purportedly by one Santosh Rai who threatened to kill him, SP City Rajesh Kumar said.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Rai, who is currently lodged in Gorakhpur jail, is a henchman of Tripathi who is serving life sentence in the murder case of poetess Madhumita Shukla in the same prison, the SP said.

Rai was booked under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC last night, he added.

Sharma had been a CBI witness in the Madhumita murder case.
