A village woman with labour pain was reportedly carried on a 'charpoy' (a light cot) to a hospital as the ambulance failed to reach her home in time in Odisha's Rayagada district, prompting the authorities to order a probe into the episode today.

The incident took place at a village in Kalyansinghpur area of the tribal-dominated district yesterday after state run ambulance failed to turn up in time to take the woman to hospital, officials said today.

Her family members said they were forced to carry her in a 'charpoy' after waiting for the ambulance for a long time.

Rayagada district Collector Jagannath Mohanty said by the time the lone ambulance available at the health centre reached the village, the patient had been taken to the hospital.

Staring that steps would be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents, he said he has directed the sub-collector to probe into the incident and submit a report.

"Both the mother and the baby are alright," said Mohanty, who directed health officials to provide necessary care to the woman.

She appears to be anaemic and may be shifted to Rayagada hospital, he said.
