For the first time, the American Society of Safety Engineers, the world's oldest professional safety society, will hold a development conference in India in May, saying it is the right moment to hold the event in a country on the rise.

"With India's rapid economic development, it is important to promote thought leadership in occupational health and safety through best-practice sharing at this historic ASSE event," ASSE president Kathy Seabrook said.

In a country with 1.3 billion people and an economy that is expected to be one of the top three in the world by 2028, according to a London-based think tank, it only makes sense for ASSE to be in India, Seabrook said.

During Safety India 2014 on May 26 and 27 in Chennai, ASSE is targeting an audience of the country's safety practitioners from a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, automotive and many others.

The conference is being held in partnership with the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC).

Founded in 1911, the Chicago-based society has more than 35,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members from around the globe. It opened an Indian chapter in March 2012.
