Amma Canteen in Saravanampatti in the city has been equipped with methane gas fuel facility, becoming the first among the low-cost eateries promoted by the state governmet to use green energy.

Inaugurating the Rs.10 lakh facility, Mayor, S M Velusamy said 200 kgs of vegetable waste would be collected daily from hotels and vegetable market and put in the 25 cubic metre capacity gas chamber for producing methane.

Stating that this initiative was based on the directive of Chief Minister Jayalalirthaa to utilise alternative energy, Velusamy said that by this the canteen would save Rs.45,000 per month on electricity charges.

This would be extended to all other Amma Canteens in the city and also Noon meal centres in a phased manner, he said.
