Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah suspended Chairman of the Commerce department Z U Khairuwala over accusations of nepotism in admission process of PhD candidates, a senior University official told PTI.
The decision comes after the submission of the report by a three-member inquiry committee yesterday night, the official said adding, the time bound inquiry was ordered last week following protest by a group of admission seekers who had raised serious charges of "nepotism" against Khairuwala.
The official said the entire admission test for PhD candidates in the faculty of Commerce has been "scrapped". He said a fresh entrance test would now be held at an "early date."
Earlier, protesting students had staged a dharna infront of the VC office and had suspended their protest earlier this week on the assurance of senior official that "justice would be done."
Spokesman of the protesting students who resumed their dharna yesterday following a "delay" in the submission of the above time bound inquiry report, have "welcomed" the suspension.

They, however, have still not called off the protest.
"We have already appeared and cleared admission test. Hence only those admission seekers should be denied admission who had been wrongfully favoured," they added.
Meanwhile, the VC has asked protesting admission seekers for PhD course in the Department of Commerce to end their dharna after the decision that a fresh test would be held.
He also assured students that "no discrimination will take place against any student even if he was involved in the protest which ultimately led to the suspension of the Chairman of the Department of Commerce."
Lt Gen Shah said the students should have "full confidence" in the transparency of the admission process.
