Aligarh Muslim University students staged a protest demanding roll back of Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah's decision to cancel the varsity's Students' Union election, which was slated on September 27.

The students staged a dharna in front of the VC's residence blast night after which Shah met some student leaders in a bid to resolve the crisis that erupted following cancellation of elections yesterday.

Sources said Shah pointed out that possibility of holding election rested on whether students could assure "campaigning would be conducted only as per recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee".

The VC had announced cancellation of election because some external anti-social elements were trying to vitiate the atmosphere and violate rules.

A meeting of the University's Executive Council has been called this evening to review the matter, said an AMU official.

Meanwhile, police continued patrolling sensitive spots on the campus as a precautionary measure.
