Abdullah Azzam, BA LLB (final year) student, was today elected president of the Aligarh Muslim University students' union (AMUSU), an official said here.

Securing a total of 5310 votes, Azzam defeated his nearest rival Leyaqat Khan by more than 600 votes.

Syed Masoodul Hasan from MA Mass Communication was declared vice president, and Shahzeb Ahmad, a student of Post Graduate Diploma of Islamic Banking, was elected as Secretary of the students' union.

Political parties or groups are not permitted to put up candidates for the elections under the AMU constitution, officials said.

The nomination of two candidates for major posts were cancelled since they failed to fulfil the provision for mandatory 75 per cent attendance, chief election officer of the union polls Hakeem Naeem Ahmad Khan said.

Gulfeza Khan was elected as president and Noorain Batool as vice president in the elections of the Women's College students' union, they added.
