The Aligarh Muslim University today said it will oppose any move to bring administration of all Central universities under one umbrella, saying it will adversely affect the autonomy of the institution.
AMU's stand comes days after UGC constituted a three-member committee to prepare a single bill for administration of all Central universities in the country.
"There are genuine fears that committee's recommendations will adversely affect autonomy of AMU, which presently enjoys a special character and is governed by a special Act. We will oppose it," Vice Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah said.
The UGC committee, headed by former Vice Chancellor of Central University of Karnataka A M Pathan, will forward its recommendations to the HRD Ministry.
The Pathan Committee recommendations can lead to serious repercussions with regard to the university's minority and historical character and a uniform law will destroy AMU's governance model, Shah said.
