Paleo-channel or paleo-river is an inactive river or water stream, buried under sediment.

"We have found the evidence of extinct paleo river which is about 6.5 crore years old in Dhar district," said Vishal Verma of 'Mangal Panchayatan Parishad'.

The Parishad is engaged in exploration of Narmada Valley.

Verma said due to geological activities, this river might have got covered under the basaltic lava.

The researchers are also trying to find out whether this ancient stream has anything to do with Narmada river. It flowed in the same direction -- East to West -- as Narmada.

The current course of Narmada is about 10 km from the site of paleo river, parallel to it. Further exploration may throw light on the origin of Narmada river, Verma said.
