Angry mob resorts to arson, vandalism over missing woman

An irate mob allegedly set on fire four huts and damaged vehicles at Sarhad-naharon-ki-dhani in the district, over the issue of a missing 19-year-old married woman, police said today.

Scores of people of a community, yesterday held a protest in Sarhad-naharon-ki-dhani, 25 km away from Jhinjhinyali town demanding that the woman, who had gone missing since the intervening night of August 15 and 16 from the area be found, police said.

The missing report was registered by her father with the Jhinjhinyali police station on August 16, they said, adding, however the community people suspected that the woman fled with a "man from a minority community".
 

Demanding arrest of the suspected man, the protesters set ablaze four huts in the village, and damaged a few vehicles yesterday, they said, adding, no one was injured in the arson.

Eighteen people of a community has been arrested for disturbing peace, and law and order, they said.

Extra force was deployed in the village where tension prevailed till last night, they said, adding the situation was normal this morning.

The missing woman's husband was working in Bikaner district, they said.

Later a peace committee meeting to resolve the tension was organised in the village, they said.

In another incident, one person Pathan Khan was wounded in a property dispute when two groups clashed with lathi and one of them opened fire, at Chandani village, near Pokaran in Jaisalmer district, last night, police said.

Injured Khan was rushed to Jodhpur in a critical stage, they said. A detailed report of the incident was awaited at the Jaisalmer headquarters, they said.
