Angry protesters damage police vehicles, assault ASI

Two vehicles of the police were damaged and an Assistant Sub-Inspector was injured after supporters of a Trinamool Congress leader in Basanti in South 24 Parganas district, clashed with the police today near Basanti police station.

Two youths today went to drop the local panchayat vice-chairman and Trinamool Congress leader Majed Mollah to Canning and while they were returning back to Basanti, a group believed to be close to Mantu Ghazi, the TMC block president, blocked their way and assaulted them, the police said.

As the news of the attack reached Basanti, a large number of Majed's supporters gheraoed Basanti police station demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
 

During the agitation, angry protesters damaged two police vehicles and also assaulted ASI Debashis Marik, who sustained injuries, the police said.

Later on a huge police force from Canning and adjoining areas reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Senior district officers have rushed to the spot and investigations were on, a senior officer said adding, no has been arrested yet in connection with the incident.
