The 60th annual conference of Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) began here with a training session on "Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery - the Indian Perspective" by president of IACTS Dr Bhabatosh Biswas.

Dr Biswas said cardiovascular and thoracic surgery has grown in India at a high pace. Most people opt for cardiac surgery whereas there are only a few takers for thoracic surgery, he said and stressed the need for inclusion of robots in the training programme of cardio vascular and thoracic surgery.

The second paper on "Training in CVTS- European Perspective" was by Dr John Pepper who spoke about cultural values versus increased specialization and desire for continuity versus constant change.

He added that the CVTS training programme must be for a six year tenure and core training should be for a minimum of two years. "We should regularly assess skill judgement and pace as well regarding the same, he said.

Dr Jose Chacko Periyappuram, well known for his contributions in heart transplantation, stressed the immediate need for innovations that India has to undertake to excel in the field of cardiology.
