The annual ban on fishing by mechanised boats and trawlers came into force in Gujarat from June 10, a government official said here today.

The ban will remain in force till August 15, Gujarat Fisheries Commissioner M H Nurmawala said.

"The mechanised boats and trawlers are not allowed to to venture into the sea for fishing during the ban period. The move is aimed at safeguarding fish in their breeding season and conservation of fish stock," Nurmawala told PTI over phone.

Veljibhai Masani, senior vice president of Gujarat Fishermen Association said, "Gujarat has over 1,600-km long coastline and is one of the leading states in marine fish production. The fishermen use this ban period to repair their boats, nets and other material and also to take rest for some days.
