Patrolling forest personnel found the carcass of the male rhino in a decomposed state near Lahorijan forest beat office in Bishwanath Chariali area of 's Sonitpur district district this morning, forest officials said.

The rhino is suspected to have been killed by poachers as its horn was removed.

The rhino, believed to have strayed to the area, was earlier spotted about a week back and the forest personnel were monitoring its movement but lost track of it about four days ago assuming that it had moved back into the park interiors.

Police, along with forest guards, have launched an operation in the area to nab the poachers.

This is the eighth incident of rhino being killed in the park since January this year.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today blocked the National Highway 37 near Kohora in Kaziranga to protest against the continuous killing of the one-horned rhinoceros in the Park.

The protestors also burnt the effigy of Assam Forest Minister Rakibul Hussain alleging that he had failed to stop continued rhino poaching in the world-famed Park.
