In two separate incidents of violence, unidentified gunmen today shot dead a leader of the liberal Awami National Party in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region while a policeman was killed here.

The Awami National Party (ANP) leader was killed in Jamrud area of Khyber Agency bordering Afghanistan, while the policeman was shot dead in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakthunkhwa.

The killing of the ANP leader was the second such incident in the last 24 hours, as earlier, Khalilullah, the district president of a national youth organisation which is attached to the ANP was killed by unidentified gunmen in Swat.

In today's incident, some unidentified gunmen opened firing at ANP tehsil president Abdul Razaq, killing him on the spot. The attackers escaped as the security forces rushed to site and cordoned off the area.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, some unidentified gunmen shot dead a policeman on Warsak road here. The assailants escaped after the attack, police said.
