Vice-President Hamid Ansari today inaugurated the Tripura State Museum, housed in Ujjayanta Palace of the erstwhile Manikya dynasty.

Ansari inaugurated the museum unveiling a plaque in presence of the Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Higher Education Minister Bhanu Lal Saha.

"People without the knowledge of their history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. I am sure that this institution will help the people of the state and the region to find their roots as they look forward to a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous future," Ansari said during the inauguration programme.

The government has decided to build a statue of Radhakishore Manikya Bahadur, who built the palace based on a design made by Sir Alexander Martin, in 1899-1901 at a cost of Rs ten lakh.

The two storied Ujjayanta Palace served as the State Legislative Assembly till 2011. The new attractions include the musical fountain installed in front of the main entrance and night-time floodlights.
