Ansari pays tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram on birth anniversary

Vice President Hamid Ansari today paid tributes to freedom fighter and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 109th birth anniversary.

Ansari along with Union Social Justice and Empowerment minister Thaarwarchand Gehlot paid floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram at his samadhi, 'Samtha Sthal' near Rajghat.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker and daughter of the Babu Jagjivan Ram, Meira Kumar and Union ministers of state for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale and Vijay Sampla also paid tribute to the late leader.

A prominent Dalit leader, Babu Jagjivan Ram was a freedom fighter and national leader who fought for the uplift of the downtrodden. His birth anniversary is celebrated as 'Samta Diwas' in the country.
 

He was a cabinet minister for 35 years and held several key portfolios.

As Food and Agriculture Minister, he is credited with the Green Revolution, and as Defence Minister he led India to victory in the historic 1971 war against Pakistan which saw the birth of Bangladesh.
