An awareness drive about the

ill-effects of various forms of addiction was conducted outside CST building in South Mumbai today ahead of New Year eve.

It was organised by 'Nashabandhi Mandal', a state government body.

On the occasion, an appeal was made to people to stay away from drugs and welcome New Year soberly.

The drive was held with the help of 55 organisations across the state.

"Age of first timer for consuming alcohol is getting reduced with boys as young as 15 are now having their booze. Even the trend of consuming tobacco or cigarette is fast gripping schools, especially civic schools, which is very detrimental to our society," said Versha V Vilas, the general secretary of the Mandal.

The organisers also put up a temporary selfie point and lifesize replicas at the venue, to sensitize people about the health hazards associated with addiction.

"We are appealing to people, especially youths, to welcome New Year in 'hosh' and not in 'josh' by drinking or consuming addictive or psychotropic substances," she said adding the demand for such substancesrise on New Year eve.

She said inspection made in civic-run schools in Maharashtra has revealed that boys, mostly from downtrodden sections, are getting drawn to addiction in young age.
