A group of people protesting against a report on girls wearing shorts telecast by an Assamese news channel were picked up by police for not obtaining "necessary prior permission".
"The protesters assembled at Guwahati Club area this afternoon to march to the office of Pratidin Time channel against the news report," a police officer said.
"They did not have necessary prior permission. So we took them to the police station. The 17 agitators were later allowed to go on personal bond," he added.

Reacting to the backfire, Pratidin Time issued an apology on its Facebook page saying "unnecessary controversy is being created by a section of people in the social media over the news telecast one and half months earlier".
The "clarification" in Assamese read, "the report was prepared on the basis of widespread discussions going on in the social and cultural circle of the Assamese society. We did not want to hurt anyone. If someone was hurt, then we are sorry.
