A 21-year old woman and her father were arrested and remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Central Jail for attempting to hold protest in front of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's residence demanding total prohibition.

The woman, a student of Madurai Law College and her father were arrested before they could stage the agitation late yesterday.

"We requested the woman and her father to hold protest after elections with appropriate permission," T Pandi, Police Inspector, Marina station told PTI adding they were arrested as they persisted in their plan.

"We had to arrest them as they did not have permission and it would disturb public order during polls."
