Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu today met Union minister Nitin Gadkari at the latter's residence here to discuss issues related to the Polavaram irrigation project.

The meeting took place for about two hours late this evening.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Naidu said, "I wanted to brief the Union minister about the Polavaram project, which is why I came here."

"For ten days, I am going to America and before going, I wanted to brief about the exact position of the project to the minister...I briefed everything to him. We want the project to be completed at the earliest and I am requesting his support and he is doing his best," Naidu added.

Replying to a query, Naidu said that it is a central government project and he was confident of Gadkari's support in its execution and completion.

"He (Gadkari) is also very eager to complete the irrigation projects in the interest of the nation," Naidu said.

In the first week of this month, Gadkari, who is the Union Water Resources minister, had inspected the Polavaram works. He had ruled out the possibility of finishing the project by 2018 and promised to try his level best to complete it before the 2019 elections.

The Andhra Pradesh government had repeatedly promised to complete the project (cofferdam) by June 2018 and supply water through gravity. However, its timeline has been reset and it is likely to be completed only by mid-2019.
