Five candidates of the ruling Telugu Desam and two of the Opposition YSR Congress today filed their nomination papers for election to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council under the MLAs' quota.

Election for the seven Council seats is slated for March 20 and tomorrow is the last day for filing nominations.

TDP's Nara Lokesh, Dokka Manikya Varaprasad, Karanam Balaramakrishna Murthy, Pothula Sunita and Batchula Arjunudu filed their nominations before Legislature Secretary (in- charge) and Returning Officer K Satyanarayana Rao.

YSRC's Alla Srinivas alias Nani and Gangula Prabhakar Reddy also filed their papers. Prabhakar's wife also submitted her papers, ostensibly as a "dummy" candidate.

Scrutiny of nominations will be held on March 8 and the last day for withdrawals is March 10.

If only seven candidates remain in the fray, they will be declared elected unopposed on March 10 evening.

The TDP has adequate numbers in the 176-member House to win five seats comfortably and the YSRC two.

Seven sitting members of the Council are due to retire on March 29 at the end of their six-year term.
