"We want to construct about 10 lakh toilets. We are doing this under total sanitation programme. We will provide Rs 10,000 for each toilet," Rural Development Minister D Manikya Varaprasad told reporters here today.
The scheme is aimed at providing sanitation facility to the poorer sections of the society, especially in rural areas, he said.
The idea is to construct 10 lakh toilets per year, Varaprasad said.
The Minister was briefing mediapersons under the 'Prajahitham' (public interest) programme during which the progress report of a Government department is presented.
Highlighting that Andhra Pradesh has done exceedingly well in implementing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), he said a total expenditure of Rs 22,510 crore was incurred since the inception of the scheme and it benefited 93 lakh rural households.
During the current financial year, a total expenditure of Rs 3,375 crore had been incurred on the scheme, which is highest for any state in the country.

He said 53.9 lakh households were given jobs under the scheme in the period with an average employment of 49.62 days per household.
The number of wage seekers during the fiscal stood at 97.5, lakhs which is highest among the states, the Minister said.
