Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly today passed a resolution requesting that the Centre soon enact a legislation providing "not less than one-third" reservation for women in Parliament and legislatures.
"The Assembly expresses its sadness over lack of adequate representation for women in law-making bodies in the country. We are lagging behind in this regard when compared to some other countries. Out of its strength of 542, Lok Sabha has only 64 women members while there are only 27 women in the 245-member Rajya Sabha.
"These numbers indicate how far justice is being done to women in democracy," the assembly said in the resolution.
The resolution was moved by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the end of a debate on women empowerment.
"The assembly feels that legal steps are required to ensure large space for women in law-making bodies (Parliament and state legislatures). The Centre should provide not less than one-third reservation for women in the legislative houses in the country. The Centre should turn this years-old dream into a reality," it said.
