The Centre had recently proposed to include millets in the mid-day meal scheme in view of their health benefits and the plan is being implemented in Mahabubnagar district in the state on a pilot basis, state agriculture department officials said.

The pilot project will be implemented up to the end of academic session of 2012-13.

Under the scheme, 'jowar roti' is proposed to be introduced once in a week for school children from first class to 10th class as part of mid-day meals programme in the district.

Besides, an overhead charge of Rs 4.25 per child is also paid towards the cost of vegetables, dal and spices.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development will provide financial assistance to the programme and the department of Food and Public Distribution would supply jowar flour through Food Corporation of India by their godowns located in Mahabubnagar district, the officials said.

The tentative number of school children covered under the programme in the district is calculated to be 4,57,158 and the exact number will be arrived at after receiving inputs from the district education officer.
