A police constable attached to the Kadapa police in Andhra Pradesh was killed while his colleague seriously injured in a road accident near Bijapur town in Karnataka early this morning when they were bringing back seized red sander logs in a truck.

While constable Prasada Naidu died in the mishap, Sub Inspector Rajeswar Reddy was seriously injured. Two others in the truck also died, said Circle Inspector Rajendra Prasad.

He, however, did not say exactly how the truck met with the accident. A team of district police had left for Bijapur, Prasad said over phone.

Special teams of Kadapa police had earlier this week conducted raids in Delhi, Jaipur and Kanpur and arrested three alleged smugglers and seized 11.3 tonnes of red sander logs -- which have a great demand in the international market -- from their godowns.

Naidu and Reddy were in the truck in which the contraband was being brought back to Kadapa.
