The Andhra Pradesh government today welcomed the Supreme Court ruling on counselling for admission in professional colleges like engineering and medical in AP and Telangana.

The Supreme Court said the counselling process will go on till August 31. The cut-off date for completion of counselling process is July 31 every year.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu welcomed the order and said efforts have to be made for smooth conduct of admission process, according to an official release here.

Talking to reporters, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Social Welfare Ravela Kishore Babu and Communications Advisor to the government Parakala Prabhakar said the Telangana government is also expected to respect the Supreme Court's decision.

Telangana has sought more time for counselling on the ground that it lacks the requisite number of staff to verify the antecedents of students, including nativity.

Meanwhile, Telangana BJP demanded that the orders of Supreme Court on Engineering, agriculture and medical common entrance test (EAMCET) counselling be implemented in toto.

Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy said EAMCET counselling should be conducted immediately as the process has already been delayed. The government should make changes, if any, in the admission system only next academic year, he said in a release.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Konagala Mahesh, in a release, also said the State government should follow the apex court orders.

Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education has issued notification for admission to engineering colleges in both the states and announced verification of certificates from August 7. However, Telangana government has asked students from the state to ignore the same.

As per the AP Reorganisation Act (which led to formation of Telangana), the common admission test would continue for ten years.
