Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) demanded here today that the union government must accord special status to the state as incorporated in the State Re-organisation Act.

It also demanded that the AP government must initiate steps to complete the Polavaram irrigation project by 2018 with financial support from the Centre.

After the APCC meeting at Atmakur village here today, APCC President N Raghuveera Reddy briefed reporters about the two resolutions passed by the committee.

He said that the APCC had resolved that the union government cabinet could accord special status as incorporated in the State Re-organisation Bill and it did not require the Parliament's approval to do so.

He said that another resolution adopted was to create a mass movement to exert pressure on the Telugu Desam Party-led AP state government to speed up construction of the Polavaram irrigation project so that it is completed by 2018.
