Apna Dal MLA detained

An Apna Dal MLA was today

detained here when she was on her way to Azamgarh to attend a Mahapanchayat called by backward Kurmi community to raise demand of three tier reservation system in Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, which was scrapped in July.

Anuriya Patel, MLA and also president of Apna Dal, was accompanied by hundreds of supporters of her party, which is a Kurmi community-based party in Uttar Pradesh.

SP (City) Faizabad, R S Gautam told PTI that Patel was detained as a precaution and was released in the evening.

She was kept in government guesthouse here during her detention, he said.
 

On her arrest, Patel said, "Samajwadi Party, which has come to power with the support of backward classes, is now stepping back when it is time to empower these communities."

BJP MP from Azamgarh Ramakant Yadav was placed under house arrest for insisting to attend the mahapanchayat.

In July this year, the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission had scrapped its reservation policy whereby caste- based quotas were introduced in competitive examinations at the preliminary stage itself.

The decision came after violent agitations by students of the general category.
