Tyre major Apollo Tyres today inaugurated its new global research and development centre, the second such centre of the company in the world.
Apollo Tyres has a similar Global Research and Development Centre in the Netherlands operational since 2013.
Apollo Tyres Chairman, Onkar S Kanwar, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Neeraj Kanwar formally inaugurated the centre at Oragadam near Chennai in the presence of the company's supervisory Board of Directors and members of the management board at a function today.
With the first Research and Development Centre employing over 150 people, the Chennai unit will have 140 people that would serve product development needs for the entire Asia Pacific, Middle East and African regions.
"Apollo Tyres has been at the forefront of launching breakthrough products over the past four decades suiting the Indian context. The Global R&D Centre, Asia will break new frontiers and accelerate our R&D vision for India and the region", Kanwar said.
"This step also aligns with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for Brand India and Technology being one of the core sectors for India becoming a global power", he said.
Besides the two Global Centres, Apollo Tyres has set up two satellite R&D centres in Bengaluru and Germany.
The Advanced Engineering Centre in Bengaluru is working towards integrating electronics into tyre technology. The German unit was towards establishing ties with leading German OE customers for both Apollo and Vredestein brands.
