NBC network has renewed serial killer drama "Aquarius", starring David Duchovny, for a second season.

A second run of the show starring the 54-year-old "X-Files" actor has been ordered by the network, reported Deadline.

Duchovny stars as a Los Angeles police officer tracking down Charles Manson in the series.

The show's two-hour pilot premiered on NBC last month, drawing in an audience of 5.67 million; the rest of the season was then released via streaming video.

NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said: "With its riveting drama and innovative release strategy, 'Aquarius' has excited the critics, hooked millions of viewers and energised our summer.

"It's no secret that the way people watch television is evolving, so we took a unique approach to how we delivered Aquarius and it's driven some record numbers for NBC Digital and helped us reach viewers who might have otherwise overlooked a great summer drama."

Duchovny is currently filming six new episodes of "The X-Files" with Gillian Anderson in Vancouver.
