An Arab militant, who was arrested from the Punjab University's hostel here last month, is believed to be the mastermind of a 2008 suicide attack on the Danish Embassy in the Pakistani capital.

The Arab militant, who had been living in the hostel with university student Sajjad Rathore, was arrested by intelligence operatives and taken away to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

Official sources told PTI that they believed the Arab was the mastermind of the attack on the Danish Embassy in June 2008 that killed eight persons. The attack also damaged the nearby residence of the Indian High Commissioner.

"The interrogation of the militant is still underway," a source said.

Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility for the attack on the embassy, saying it was carried out in response to the publication of blasphemous cartoons by a Danish newspaper and the presence of Danish troops in Afghanistan.

Sources said law enforcement agencies had arrested about 10 accomplices of the Arab militant from different parts of Punjab province.

The arrested suspects had plans to target buildings of law enforcement agencies in the province, they said.

The sources further said the Arab militant had been trained in the lawless Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

After the arrest of the Arab militant, Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Mujahid Kamran had ordered a crackdown in hostels to flush out illegal boarders.
