"TACTV Corporation is taking necessary action to start its services in Chennai metropolitan area in digital mode soon" and necessary infrastructure was being put in place for this purpose, IT Minister Mukkur N Subramanian told the Assembly.
"The subscriber base of the TACTV Corporation Ltd which was 4.94 lakh on September 2, 2011 has increased to over 49.53 lakh as on April 30, 2012 with an operator base of 21,123", he said.
Jayalalithaa government had revived Arasu Cable TV service last year after assuming power.
Arasu Cable TV, which had gained steam during the previous DMK regime at the height of a family feud between party chief M Karunanidhi and his grandnephews and media barons, the Maran brothers, had gone dormant after they patched up.
Subramanian said people in the state were paying between Rs 150-250 per month for cable TV services prior to the launch of TACTV Corporation but were now being offered 100 channels, both free-to-air and paid ones, at a cost of Rs 70 and they had "overwhelmingly" welcomed the effort.
The monthly subscription earnings from local cable operators and Multi-System Operators was Rs 32.67 crore besides the advance of Rs 25.97 crore collected from them.
