Officials from the archaeology department today inspected the site near the north gate of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple here where remnants of an old building and stone steps were found beneath the road.

The steps were found a few days ago by workers engaged in digging a trench to install bollards as part of strengthening the security of the temple where invaluable treasure is kept in underground vaults.

The trench, measuring 1.5 m in width and depth, was dug across the road around 50 m away from the gate.

The works were stopped after three granite steps were found on one end of the trench and remains of a foundation on the other end.

The temple hogged worlwide media glare in 2011 as a court-ordered inventory confirmed that its underground vaults contained huge treasures.
